Crape myrtle find Posted by Jason Western PA on August 25, 2024, 8:26 pm While on an outage this morning I pulled into this driveway and saw the pink and knew what it was. Crape Myrtle in my area. Not in my Twp but just over the line. That makes 6-7 locations I have seen within 10 miles from home. She had another one also that was a darker pink. I said, nice crape myrtle. In her old voice, I got that in Maryland. She gave me an apple from her tree also. Also, Friday I stopped at my local nursery where I worked 20 years ago and talked to the owner Teresa. She was also stuck on her being in z 4. It drove me nuts. She would never buy outside her zone. Not even redbuds. Well, she is coming out of her zone. She has a crape myrtle at her house that is blooming nicely. I gave her a start of one of mine this spring and she is planning on making a big bed for people to see. She is adding it there.

The good thing about Crapes is that they bloom on new wood. Even if there's winter damage, it can still bloom. They talk about native plants that pollinators love. But they love my Chaste Tree, my Ligustrum japonicum, and my Crape Myrtles. None of these are native.

My grandmother who lived between Akron-Canton could never get a crape myrtle to survive there back when I was a kid but the weather has changed. Thanks Jason.

Not sure what they are. We have a white one here that blooms first in the spring and I don't think its the same type. Thanks Jason.
