The BEEFSTEAK PLANT, Perilla frutescens, has come into its season best. Regarded as edible, as a salad green, this plant loves shade, and reseeds itself...
Another of my ROSE of SHARON cultivars, is blooming. This one is named, 'Freedom'. I got it from Logee's, several years ago. It is regarded as a watermelon-red, semi-double selection... \
HARDY GINGER, anyone? This one is known botanically, as Roscoea purpurea. This cultivar is, 'Red Gurkha'. This plant came from Far Reaches Farm, several years ago..
Here's an elephant ear, I got from Brian's Botanicals, back in the spring, in a 4 inch pot. It has done a good amount of growth, since then. The cultivar is: Colocasia esculenta 'Waikiki'...
Thanks, Kev. This resemblance is why I wanted to get this one. I like the pinkish eye in the center of each leaf. Both Colocasias and Caladiums are Arums, and have flowers that resemble those on Jacks in the pulpit (spathe and spadix).

Alvin, the Beefsteak plant is incredibly invasive here as are most Colocascia and the hardy cassia. Nothingr is redder than a cardinal flower, beautiful. Beautiful rose of Sharon. I have to trim most of my rose of Sharon’s as they are taking up just too much space. They were beautiful this year, they are about past bloom stage at this point in summer. They are a favorite of mine.
Thanks, Fred. Beefsteak plants will reseed, but they'll do it more in shader gardens. They don't seem to like full sun, as it tends to make their leaves more Bronze, than burgundy. I agree that Cardinal Flowers are "red red". They are redder than the bird. Catholic cardinal robes are pretty red, though, perhaps more like the flower. I usually remove the Cassia seed pods, before they ripen. Interestingly, previously, I posted that my hardy tapioca (Manihot grahamii) was flowering. All its flowers fell off, though, with no seeds to form. My Rose of Sharon's get their annual haircuts, in spring, before leaves appear.
