Fred And Others, Pine ID Please Posted by Terry SE KY Harlan Co. on January 19, 2021, 5:23 pm These may not be long haired southern pines Fred but not sure as most are pretty big now, were much smaller years ago. I promised a pic or two the other day when Tom posted on his baby long hair. These are not best quality photos as I had to quickly almost stop in mid road to take pics with cars coming. What kind of pines are these? These are located half a mile from work in downtown Harlan. I did a few zoomed in but most zoomed out as larger pine trees are too tall to zoom in. I always thought older loblollies kinda lose their lower limbs, or maybe people trim them. I'm not entirely sure, they could be loblolly but i feel confident they aren't longleaf. Just my 2 cents. They for sure arent the common Virgina Creepers we have around here. They aren't (or I don't think) are the White Pines either that people can buy and plant. They look like pines I have seen near coastal Carolinas before.

I kinda didn't think it was longleaf but looked like the type you start to see more common in the Deep South and not the more typical Virginia type here.

As far as I know and Im far from being an expert, Loblolly and Shortleaf are very similar looking but there are differences especially when young and needle color and the Shortleaf has a darker trunk I believe. Loblolly use to be a very popular tree here before the southern pine beetle destroyed thousands of them 35 years ago.

We mostly have Virginia Pines throughout the mts here but I do see some like those above, just not many like your area on southward. I don't think the White Pines occur naturally much around here and mostly planted in yards or around structures like shopping centers.

I think the crown is tighter on Yellow pine and to tight for a Longleaf. , but I am non expert on pines, lol. We have a lot of very old loblolly here. I see them with their beautiful reddish bark as I do my daily walk. Some are towering giants. Like Ken says they could be Loblolly or maybe Yellow as Rob said. I do not know. LOL.
