still an 8b winter here Posted by JimNiagara6b on January 18, 2021, 1:18 pm well sorta. Average daily temp in Dec 38, and Jan 35, so not the average daily temps you would see in a real 8b. Low so far in January 16f. I can honestly say I have only seen this once before in 20 years where we had an 8b winter up to mid Jan. That year we hit our low in February and ended up having a 7a winter. We get tested again with an anticipated low of 17 this weekend, but things seem to warmup a bit after that. So far the unprotected needles are doing well.

Here, we have had 5 or 6 teens here, all back in December. January has been chilly by day but mild by night, above 20 for lows.

Last year, I had a zone 8b winter but I got colder than you back Christmas week here! Still mild by night here but my highs have been much colder this winter compared to last 4 winters. Nothing real cold on the horizon for east US or Canada, I hope you stay above 10 all winter, good luck!

LOL I had a Josh Turner CD so I was good to go!

I am taking Prevagen to help memory and trying to improve my Spanish by studying some to keep brain active . I do read quite a bit to try and keep brain active as well.

Its nice to hear the eastern Provinces have been fairly mild this year. Appreciate you stating that although your an z8b this winter, the temps and highs are not indictive of a z8b climate. I just feel it serves no purpose in thinking someone has a (whatever) low they are having, is that climate. Thanks. Ive had a z8b low myself but it sure doesn't feel Montgomery Alabama As many here do, I have been watching weather trends closely for the past few years and seeing the NE (from Detroit to Niagara anyways) mostly untouched from those brutal upper Midwest lows but the jet stream can skirt the northern tier here in the United States and that is why your getting some of those colder events, Your region is a strong z6a/b at worst and strongly rivals my area here except we warm earlier in spring in general. If worse comes to worse, throw an old carboard box over your needle palms, that's an old Appalachian method Stay safe Jim and hope you get down south when time and interest allow. Keep in touch!

correction in my lows Posted by Rob North Tennessee on January 19, 2021, 4:16 pm, in reply to "Jim" No zone 8b here, I've had two 12* lows in December 2020 a 17* and a 18* low in December 2020 and three 19* degree lows in December 2020 A snowy Christmas eve followed with that 12* Christmas morning and the following morning These temps are below average for sure and especially for December but I know what zone Im in.

First zone low 7b, below zone 8 in over 2 years. I still have no thermometer but I accept it as I have minor burn damage on my Windmill, Sagos and Chamaerops. No lows below 20 in January though. I had no burn damage last year! Also, people's Pampas grass is pretty beat up and brown this winter but stayed green last year, so I accept it, you win, SO FAR this winter Check out Detroit: https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/detroit/48226/december-weather/348755?year=2020 You, me, Fred and about everyone on here has had at least one night colder than Detroit this winter!!! Trending much colder up north to end January as some of that Euroasia cold is moving over, but still, the south has truly been colder than the north this winter, so far, strange winter. Even parts of deep south Texas have seen nights colder than Detroit, LOL!

The official lowest (Detroit Metropolitan Airport/ KDTW), so far, was 19. For some reason, although I live in the city, less than 10 miles from where Detroit City is located, my temps always mimic those at official airport location, in Romulus. My elevation may be a tad higher, in my part of the city, than at city airport. The city airport is also closer to the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair, and gets a slight moderation, due to proximity to bodies of water. So the west side of the city is colder than the east side. Also, higher elevations usually translate to colder minimums.

Probably see your coldest so far this winter next week, but still looks like teens only😁. I hope you can pull off a zone 8 winter. Have you ever stayed above 10 that far north all winter? Last year, I only reached 15 for coldest lows and my EEs started coming out in March!. I had mulched them as usual and so warm that they had zero bulb damage. Crazy! Last year, however, I had much warmer days too. This winter has been chilly by day but above average most nights for lows here. I had 70s and 80s in February and March last year, so the EEs started growing earlier than ever here before.

That's what I was telling Jim, along the northern tier its not been so bad in the last few years. My average in December is 49* to 50* for daily highs and 29* to 30* daily lows. December 2020 was very harsh and cold here and I accidently left out a 16* low in early December. So make my lows as follows: 2 lows at 12* 1 low at 16* 1 low at 17* 1 low at 18* 3 lows at 19* Similar to most Januarys in dead winter. The only saving face in those lows was that they were on the right of zero btw - I wasn't trying to start a contest with you. When I saw how bad my lows were I checked yours (since we are almost always identical- down to the low temps even though we are in different time zones, in different states and latitudes and are geographically different) I still think overall, you have a better climate.

I never protect the needles and most years they will get that dark green color which means by mid summer they are brown luckily then send up new fronds so far this year they look untouched .
