Cold hardy citrus Posted by Warren , Elkins, WV on January 17, 2021, 11:12 pm Was doing some googling this afternoon and saw that there's some citrus plants that can go down to 10F. Has anyone in some of the cooler zones played around with plants like this? I see some oranges, limes, etc. listed as being cold hardy. It's got me thinking what I could get away with in 5B/6A.... Anyone got any experience out there? Thanks

It is a lime like citrus. I had luck with Dunstan grapefruit but it is mostly ornamental.. I am a barely zone 8 A. Hardy ornamental citrus might work for you. Rob on this board could tell you plenty about it.

It has fragrant flowers and ornamental fruit, but they are too oily and seedy to really eat out of hand and enjoy. May make a good jam or a drink? I’ve tried most of the “hardy” ones and killed them all in zone 7. Citrus cannot take durational freezes at all. They will straight up die to the ground. Should you protect with heat and moisture resistant cages, then anything is possible. I advise to getting some good tasting citrus in pots and enjoy them that way.

It has the look and scent of citrus and it is a citrus but the fruits are small and so bitter. Kris had an awesome solution, many types can fruit as potted so try one that interests you. I do have a Trifoliate Orange as others do here and it takes several years to have a tree size fruiting specimen. Pot grown would be a great alternative. Good luck and keep in touch.
