Couple of pics this morning Posted by Fred Sc on January 17, 2021, 10:19 am I went out and took a couple of pictures just now to put up to show how my Hybrid Butia is doing and to show the Camellia after these cold temps here. The palm is not desiccated, as one would expect, but looks healthy enough even though personally I think it to be ugly. The Camellia still has buds that will open when we have a few nights with temps in the upper thirties and forties. It is still trying to open buds even with some lows in 20's. This Camellia , as you can tell form all the pics I have posted this winter, is one of the most 'florific' of any you may see. Is that your Dorothy's Surprise. Looks great Fred considering some cold nights as the southeast has been about as cold as the north this winter.

I like the size of your butia and cant help but wonder if that's the same pot you bought it in. Im thinking its worth a shot being planted and its possible you could get those lush sweeping frond effects that this palm is known for. Some people might be surprised to know that this species can be very variable, much like Trachycarpus fortunei. I think they are just a perfect match for z8ish. I ordered a 1g from https://texascoldhardypalms.com/ the other day and I'd like to plant it out in the new season but I might keep it potted. The palm is on backorder but I'm hoping I will get it by mid spring. They are slow growers and that suits me well. Nice to see Dorothys Surprise Camellia still looking great. That is an amazing camellia and I really like the coil of the blossoms and the foliage is healthy and happy. I see lots of blooms that will appear on into winter. The potted Butia you show is what a Butia should look like not so lanky and Charlie Briwn looking like mine in a blue pot I had on hand from buying a Chamaerops humilis’ cerifera’ years back in Greer, and when I dug this Butia up, because it was so ugly , I used that blue pot. I would never have bought a Butia so ugly.lol. I do not remember if I grew this one from seed or it was given to me. I have had it for years and years now. I tried to give it to a neighbor and he said no, lol. He said he wanted a palmetto like mine. Nice, lol, but mine are all Trachycarpus!

I bet if you planted in ground it would grow out of the ugly stage. I would love a Butia and you are warm enough to grow it, so plant it!

I will try to get some one to give it a break and plant it if it survives another winter outside in its pot! It deserve some respect.

I don't notice any difference in hardiness of potted things vs. those in the ground. If something is hardy at a certain temp, it'll survive that temp in the ground, or if potted, especially if well-drained.
