Another Day, Another Snow But Not This Cold! Posted by Terry SE KY Harlan Co. on January 16, 2021, 1:12 pm My "chilly" winter continues here in SE KY. Last 3 years, I have had many days above 50 fir a high but this year has been chilly with mostly 30s and 40s fir highs since December 1st and snowy! While no real bad minimum lows, it has been MUCH cooler this winter and snowy with new snow today❄😁... [img]https://i.ibb.co/dppN6Mj/20210116-111000.jpg[/img] But, a chilly winter is nothing compared to this: All time record lows for each state in the US... [img]https://i.ibb.co/mRYqwxV/coldest-temp-states.jpg[/img] Check that out Fred, it has been nearly -20 even in SC. These lows only go back to past few centuries of data, so probably been colder than this at some point centuries ago! Seeing this and not reaching zero in a long time, makes this winter very wimpy!

It was on top of Ceaser’s Head, one of the Mts I. Blue Ridge Mts. In Kentucky I think in Shelby CO in north central Ky, not on Big Black in Harlan

Had a wet snow here and it started early last evening and not sure what time it ended but the sun was out for a while this morning and we have been way above freezing for most of the day. Its melted a lot. I don't think we will see a freezing low until Monday morning and we have had several 50* highs this winter so its really not been very bad. Had a low around mid-teens the beginning of December. The low temp map you posted is scary and hope it doesn't happen again. You and Fred mentioned that -6 in 1966 over in Greenville and I'm fairly sure that during that same time there was an unofficial low near Oneida,Tn of 34* below. I remember my grandfather mentioning it. Oneida is due south of Sterns and Whitley City and SSW of Williamsburg with tons of switchbacks and mountains in between.

Harlan has more obscure data due to not an official NWS site setup. I have search and searched and came up with nothing lower than -18! I am unsure on that but that isn't that low when you look at the country as a whole, bet for sure high mts here have been much colder, just no reported data!

I have had a lot of 40s but only a few days above 50 since early December! It was last above 50s New Year's weekend and only high 40s since. It is snowing again here! First one about melted off at 35 today but calling for an inch tonight and another inch Sunday. I am watching a POTENTIAL winter storm threat for us both around Friday next week. I already topped 11 inches or near seasonal average here today at the house, much more than that up high, however❄❄❄ PS, I love seeing Big Mama and your yuccas in the snow, beautiful. Camera angle, however, I think makes your yard look like a hill grade but before I thought it was flat? Is it just the camera angle?

Re: -18 Here??? Posted by Fred SC on January 16, 2021, 7:06 pm, in reply to "-18 Here???" Where I lived in N Central Ky we dropped to-15 the same night. That -37 was only maybe 35 miles from me. It was in1985 as I recall. That spell was unbelievably cold and snowy. We had 15 inches of snow on ground! Never had seen anything like that, note had anyone else.

We will have a few flurries but nothing sticking I don't think. I normally don't get excited about snow but it was just Racine, Wisconsin last night big ole flakes and coming down hard. Beautiful when you don't have to deal with it a lot. I think we had 3" of snow and that's really not a lot of snow. The mountain tops are covered for sure. That was a camera angle, my dog was pulling me. The rostrata and elata are on a knob and the Yard from there drops 90° to that street. Thanks Terry and I hope the kids build a snowman. My neighbor was helping his little boy build a snowman today and it looked so cool. Scarf, black top hat, the works. Drove by a little while ago and just a black top hat on a pile of snow Little Tiago will be sad if he sees it.

My Dad up in Crossville got about 3" but it was melting some. We had few snow showers earlier today but it melted as it landed and a little sunshine helped. No snow on the ground here, thankfully. I have that feeling, call it an obvious hunch, lol, that you are not missing living on the high Plateau at all. I noticed you often barely miss most of these snows I get here. Even Knoxville had a good snow Christmas but your area barely missed it. Your definitely a little warmer than other areas in East TN🌞🏝. Crossville is definitely colder than Harlan city due to elevation differences. I received 1 and 1/4 inches here but high up got 3 to 4 like Crossville.

Man i hated the weather up there. We left on a fishing trip one year in April and snow covered the cars and roofs. This is probably about as good as it gets for me, it ain't too bad. I really like all the area has to offer, just wish it was a solid zone 8. Could be worse. Kevin seTN
