For anyone unfamiliar with this tropical plant, this Columbian-native has become super popular in the State of Hawaii. So much so, that this plant has been dubbed, "the Heart of Hawaii". The flowers do have a heart shape:

The first GARDENIA flower of the season, and boy does it smell great. If you have never inhaled the scent of this flower, you are missing a treat. I grew this shrub from a two-inch pot start, last year. The cultivar is, 'Pillowtalk'...

Here's a pic of a new LOQUAT start I got. For anyone unfamiliar with the loquat, it is a subtropical, evergreen tree, that produces an edible fruit..

Here is a pic of another tropical tree I got. it is an AFRICAN Tulip Tree, or Spathodea campanulata. This one is grafted, and it is possible that it can bloom in a large container. The blooms are normally a fiery orange color, but this is the 'Aureus' strain, which has orangey-yellow flowers. Here, it is putting on new foliage..

Any idea why this flower was named, 'Red Birds in a Tree'? What "red bird" could they be referring to?

Here is a new shrub I got. It is a SKIMMIA. For anyone unfamiliar with this plant, it is an evergreen subtropical. Usually, the sexes of this plant are separate, as in hollies. However, this is the REEVE'S cultivar, or reevesiana. This is a self-pollinating plant. So, just one plant is necessary for fruiting. Actually, this plant already has some green berries on it already. They should turn red, this fall:

The EVENING PRIMROSE or Oenothera biennis, is blooming. Just as its botanical name indicates, it is a biennial, or blooms in its second year. Since this flower blooms after dark, and pollinated by moths (night-flying butterfly-like insects), I had to use a flashlight for illumination, take the pic...
