I had one live here for 15 years. It died a few years ago. I think the pipe heating cable I was using, failed. They are incredibly slow-growers, so it could take decades for them to "get too big to protect". When I planted my previous one, it was grown from a Forestfarm "tube-sized" plant, and was less than a foot tall. After 15 yrs in the ground, it grew to be nearly 3 ft tall. It would cost a small fortune to purchase a 3ft or bigger Monkey Puzzle.
They love acid soil, that is already relatively fertile, because they don't like alot of fertilizer. They don't mind part shade either (I have alot of that in my yard). It could also help them survive better in hot climates, although I don't think you are in a terribly hot part of the country.
I got my Firmiana simplex from Brian's Botanicals, in Kentucky, through mail order. He may still carry them. Not sure if they are sold much, on a local basis.
