Short answer, regarding alot of volunteer holly, I'd have to say, no. Birds that eat holly berries, in my yard, would likely drop the seeds, elsewhere, after the berries were digested, and not on my "little lot". However, I do not know of any other hollies in my area, as well as other heavy seeders, like Mimosa. Right now, even though I have several holly species, in my yard, only my Winterberry and Blue hollies, fruit. I do have a male Winterberry, as well as Blue male, in my yard, and the fruits do develop and ripen, on the females, but I have seen no seedlings, in my yard. The birds strip the bushes clean, often before Christmas, too.
The English holly is a female. I don't have a male English holly to pollinate her. Same goes for my American Holly, which is a female, with no male counterpart, in my yard, or known to be in the area. Fruit results only if the female flowers are pollinated by a male, usually of the same species.
I have been limiting the size of my American holly to about 9-10 ft, through an annual trim, while on a stepladder. They only put on about 8-12 inches of growth, per year.
