Fred, people like you that worked hard for what little they had is inspiring. It's what most Appalachians are noted for.
People where I live are still disadvantaged in some remote areas. Great distances divided opportunities in the past.
I'll never forget my grandfather taking me to an old coal mining community a few miles east of here when I was a kid.
Homes were made out of a hard type of cardboard and people lived in old vehicles. Things are better now and most communities are beautiful and as modern as anywhere in the United States.
Every generation or so has a story but poverty here was insane. My grandfather was a mailman and a farmer. Never took relief or assistance and always grew and farmed their own food. People don't even know how to do much of that anymore.
I bet you wished you still had that Chevy Bel-Air
that car today is worth anywhere from $35,000 to $70,000 today. My dad bought me a little Nash Metropolitan when I started secondary, while a small and cheap car at the time, today in excellent shape they are only worth $15,000 to $25,000. I loved that car ![]()
