There are a wide variety of BLEs and conifers, that are not only fully hardy, in z6 (with no artificial protection), other than just Arborvitae, pines, and spruce. Here is another conifer to add to the list of plants, those interested in growing evergreens could grow. This is the Douglas Fir, a tree native to the West Coast. In fact, This is the favored Christmas tree, out there, while the Fraser Fir, is the choice of those in the East. North Carolina sells a large number of Frasers, that are sent all over the country. This little Douglas is a dwarf, and would take many years to get large, but is a Douglas, nontheless. Notice not a speck of burn on the needles AFTER -10F!:
