Trachycarpus 'Tesan' (often listed as Trachycarpus fortunei 'Tesan' or var. tesan) is generally considered a highly robust, distinct strain or ecotype of Trachycarpus fortunei rather than a direct hybrid between two different species.
Here are the key details regarding its nature:
Origin: It is recognized as a superior, cold-hardy form of Trachycarpus fortunei that was discovered or introduced from China (often cited as originating around Beijing and that place is z7b with a heat island of 22 million people).
Characteristics: It differs from typical T. fortunei by having a much thicker, more hairy trunk, faster growth, shorter/stiffer leaflets, and larger, waxy seeds.
Hardiness: It is noted for exceptional cold tolerance, capable of withstanding temperatures down to approximately -4*f (-20*c)
Misconceptions: While some online discussions sometimes conflate it with hybrids due to its distinct features, it is widely classified as a variant or selection of the fortunei species, often referred to as a "Tesan" strain.
Trachycarpus fortunei 'Wagnerianus' should fit that same description I would think.
