People like Iowa Jim, Detroit Alvin, SC Fred, Mark in Maryland and so many others made it work.
Lloyd you have to get very far south to be immune from winter. -25* is the coldest recorded here and in years past I can remember not seeing the ground in almost 2 months, it just didn't happen every winter.
Don't ever believe palms are not being protected currently in the south. They just aren't talking about it. It's ok to protect things. In years past our biggest snow came in March and we always had our first freeze in the first 7 days of October, yes it warmed up again but by Halloween it was winter again.
It got to the point where palms can get to large to protect and thats certainly true with our out of zone evergreen trees. I grew desert tree yuccas, grasses and bananas for 7 years before being talked into growing palms by my Nephew and the late Gerry McKinnis of NeoTropics.
