Of course, a Loblolly Pine wouldn't even survive a mild winter here, But the hybrid Pitlolly Pine (Loblolly x Pitch) sounds interesting. Supposed to be more forgiving of soil conditions than Pitch but with much of its cold hardiness. Has the fast upright growth of the Loblolly. People up here that have experimented with this hybrid found a lot of variability between individuals, with most not being reliably hardy here but the few that were (which resembled more of the Pitch parent) performed great. I got on a waiting list for a bunch of these that I hope to plant in a test bed and transplant out the survivors after a couple winters.
But then these got me going on one of those hopeless quests. The Pitch Pine would be fun to try in some wildlife plantings, but bulk seedlings of northwestern provenance are hard to come by. There is a small area of native population in east central Minnesota that I would love to find the genetics of. But I found my Middle Niobrara Valley genetics of the Ponderosa Pine after so many years of looking, so who knows?
So again, thanks for the info, you never know what will be the inspiration for others here.
Lloyd
