I saw a photo similar to yours and it was described as space x and possible liquid oxygen release, flying over England. What an awesome photo you have Fred. Much better than the British one if it's even the same object. wow.
We have the first Dark Skies Park created east of the Mississippi. There are a few in the south now and I believe a good one is in the Florida Keys.
West of the Mississippi River there are many.
A place you've seen, Big Bend National Park is amazing I hear and Bisby, Arizona is another.
No Northern Lights here, but . .

Fred here is another (winter sky) in Cumberland County where Kevin (of this forum) lived when he was a younger lad.
