Can you imagine 'Dorothy's Surprise' blooming most all year and able to withstand cooler winter temperatures?
According to news releases, that's exactly what hybridizers are planning for 2026.
Extended Bloom Seasons: Hybridizers are busy working on varieties, often using the Camellia azalea species, that can bloom year-round or through the summer months, a significant departure from the traditional fall/winter bloom times.
Increased Cold Hardiness: New cultivars are being developed to withstand colder temperatures (into USDA Zone 6 or lower), expanding the regions where camellias can thrive.
Unique Characteristics: Efforts are ongoing to produce plants with novel features, such as fragrant flowers, varied growth habits (compact or columnar), and improved disease resistance.
Hybrid Crosses: Breeders are also creating non-reticulata and reticulata hybrids with specific desirable traits like flower color and form.
