Here is a pic of an OAK-LEAVED RED HOLLY, Ilex x 'Conaf', and the pic below it, are two types of Aucuba japonica. There are quite a few Aucuba cultivars on the market now, with various forms of leaf variegation. The ones in the pic are the regular gold-speckled type, along with a 'Wisley Nana', that was a layered, rooted cutting from its mother plant. ALL did not defoliate, or dieback, despite my subzero winter minimum, with windchill factors waaay below zero. However, they were tarped-over, for the winter months:

Here are several potted plants that survived my subzero winter, in my unheated garage. In winter, temps are about 10 degrees higher than in the open garden. So, I estimate the coldest temps, in my garage to have been in the single digits, minus wind. In the pic below is a Magnolia 'Coppertallica', an evergreen huckleberry, and a Berberis julianae. ALL are rated zone 7 hardy, or a zone above mine...

Here is a pic of my STRAWBERRY TREE, Arbutus unedo. I planted it last fall. I used just a styrofoam rose cone over it, over the winter. Although it is rated z7 hardy, it seems to have survived a z6 winter:
