Fred, Tony Cerbone, in Dallas, used to have an Argentine Saquaro planted in the ground. It looked to be about 4 ft tall, back then. He claimed it was hardy in z8. However, Dallas had a below zero winter, 2 or 3 yrs back. If only z8 hardy, I assume it died with many of his other beautiful palms. I think Jason found a recent video post from him, off Facebook, and posted it.
No, I don't think you can consider your cactus as a true bonsai, which require frequent root and top prunings. Evergreen and deciduous bonsai trees treated this way can develop gnarly bark, because these mini trees can be several decades old, if not centuries old, in relatively small pots. I don't know if cacti could survive with root prunings, though, to stay in the same size pot, if root bound. Usually removal of some roots require removal of part of the above ground part of the plant, to balance out the pruning. This method controls the size of the plant. I guess this is why bonsais are generally made from conifers or BLEs.
