I have had another Jujube tree in my yard, for years. The fruit on it is very small, so I know it is not one of the named cultivars, like Li and Lang, which produces larger fruit. The fruit can be dried, and are then very sweet. They get sweeter, after the water content is removed, like it is with prunes, and raisins. When dried, Chinese dates are as sweet as Medjool variety dates available in grocery stores. What I like is the speed with which jujube trees can begin fruiting (within 2 yrs from planting, which is quick for a fruit tree.
You're right, regarding Carissa being the Natal Plum genus. They are kinda xeric plants. Maybe, the female name is derived from this plant.
