As far as palm trees, there are a couple planted locally. As far as trunked palms go, I know of one Butia at a restaurant and a couple of Windmills up against a strip shopping center a block or so from the ocean. But they are not common at all. Sabal minors and Needles are bulletproof here and often seen around the town.
Your best bet at seeing a palm tree heading south would probably be Virginia Beach. I'm not saying that there aren't any before you reach that point, but your chances are better there. Ocean City MD is about 10 miles south and there might be one or two hidden. Chincoteague Virginia, about an hour south, might have a couple. This area is at the northern reaches of 8a. By the time you get to Virginia Beach, you're in 8b now.
As far as naturally occuring palms go, there are sabal minors growing near Cape Hatteras NC. That's about 4 hours south "as the crow flies" from the location of this photo. The first naturally occuring trunked palms would be Sabal palmettos at the extreme tip of North Carolina south of Wilmington NC near the South Carolina border. That would be about 6 hours south "as the crow flies" from the location of this photo. They're more common farther south on the coastal islands of South Carolina.
