The Boxleaf Azara, however, is only rated z8 hardy. I would never say this plant is solidly z6 hardy, here. Here's how it is faring so far:

Here's a plant I'm growing in my garden. It is native to Down Under countries, like Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. It, too, is z8 rated. I lifted the cone from this plant to see how it is faring, so far, in a true z6 climate. The plant is the MOUNTAIN PEPPER, Drimys lanceolata. Anybody else growing this BLE, in their "ot of zone" garden, protected or otherwise?

This plant surprises me the most, so far. This plant is also native to the Down Under part of the world. It is rated only z9 hardy, but can grow, in z8, as a die-back perennial, if mulched. Yet, somehow, with the Wall o Water you see, a rose cone over that, and everything covered over with a plastic garbage can, although the foliage is wilted, the leaves are not crispy, and everything is green. The plant is the HONEYBUSH, Melianthus major...

Correction!
I am also surprised about this plant, even more so, than the Honeybush. This plant is also rated z9 hardy, but its leaves look completely unscathed, after my z6 (-3F) minimum. This plant is another Down Under native, and is called the MIRROR BUSH, Coprosma repens 'Evening Glow'. Anybody else, but me growing a Mirror Bush, in the ground?

Here's another plant I'm growing, in the ground, that is rated as a z8 die-back perennial. The plant is the HIMALAYAN MINT, Colquhounia coccinea. Most of the foliage is gone, but the stems are green, and there are still a few green leaves on the plant...
