Here are two pics of two different forms of JAPANESE LAUREL, Aucuba japonica, I have in my garden. One has a solid green leaf, with no variegation. It is a female, of the 'Wisley Nana' cultivar. The other is the standard, speckled leaf form. Nowadays, breeders have developed a number of other colored variegated types of Japanese Aralia. Anybody growing other than the standard speckle-leaf forms? Although these plants came through my recent below zero temps, quite well, I would not say these are solidly z6 hardy. In years past, when I let them go with no protection, and temps went significantly below zero, the female died nearly to the ground. This is why I know they are not solidly z6 hardy. Nevertheless, with just a vinyl tarp, with no heat, they have even survived z5b (-14F) minimums. Today, I peeled back the tarps, to see how these plants fared, this winter, so far...

It seems to be doing ok, so far. Ian of the Desert Northwest Nursery describes this as one of the cold-hardiest forms of this species from Down Under. He grows this BLE, in Washington State, with NO PROTECTION...

Here is a LOBLOLLY BAY, Gordonia lasianthus, growing in my yard. The leaves are supposed to turn reddish, in winter. Mine only took on a speckled leaf coloration, lol. Anybody else growing this plant in their garden?
