This forum was actually created as a place for those growing hardy palms and plants in the temperate climates by Paul from Cincinnati Ohio. In the beginning, the old Hardy Palms and Subtropical Plants forum actually had their cover page highlighted as zone 7 and above. Today this forum is blessed with growers from z8 and beyond and are extremely helpful to others.
While I did mention it was in the 70*s yesterday, that was just an example and it was followed by "next week it could be the other way around" I'm just glad people realize its just a garden board to share, learn, review about palms and plants that we think look good in the landscapes (and trying something different that no one else is growing)
I just want to say, I know what gardening is about on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. Ive seen February warm up and stay put and I have seen freezes in May (both those examples are rare though) Trying to grow things in Tennessee is challenging because we get the Northern and Southern weather influences and its really hard to plan for.
Im aware other states have that same problem too.
Friends in the north have Northern regions too. Things that stand out for me are plants that grew hardy for years, suddenly get damaged or even killed outright.
Yes, there are some palms and arid plants looking good in Tennessee but those are in the most extreme southern boundaries and those that aren't, may have damages or could die without protection. Further proof that you can grow anything, anywhere if your committed to protect. Personally, I don't want to hear about someone's mishaps or planting list in Brownsville, Texas, Los Angeles or Miami, so I'm thankful I can learn from those in the Temperate Zones.
It's definitely OK to show your palms and plants doing great in photos and texts in the Temperate Zones,
I love to see them do well and whats growing in your yard. Keep sharing friends. Thanks for listening to me rant.
