Despite being covered with several inches of snow, recently, the "winter elephant ears", Arum italicum, are still fully green...

Last month, I posted a pic of this Monkey Puzzle, Araucaria aracana, plant, well before the cold blast, and still unprotected. This is how it looks today, after the blast and -3 low. Nothing but the styrofoam rose cone, sitting next to it, was used as protection...

Here is a pic of a new Camellia edithae, plant, I got from Woodlanders, just this past October. This is a rarer form of Camellia. A styrofoam rose cone goes right over the Wall o Water. It seems to be doing ok, so far...

I am really impressed with the plant in the pic below, so far. I got this plant, in early summer 2023. The plant is a variegated FATSHEDERA 'Angyo Star'. Fatshedera are made from crossing a Fatsia with an English Ivy. The latter parent is much hardier (down to z5), than Fatsia (reliably, z8 hardy), and grows here, unprotected, as a vining groundcover. Since one of its parent is a vine, Fatshedera is less upright, than Fatsia, and somewhat sprawly, if not staked.
Fatshedera could be getting its seemingly greater hardiness from the English Ivy parent. Why I'm impressed, is that although both Fatsia AND Fatshedera have been given the same z8 rating, the Fatshedera is performing even better than the 'Spider Web', I've had for years....USING THE SAME PROTECTION METHOD. Each year, I lose a few leaves on my Fatsia (especially at the top of the protection), even though it still does well, overall. A styrofoam rose cone goes over the Wall of Water, you see. The Fatshedera is nearly 3 ft tall, and is still staked, from when the plant arrived. There are two Walls o Water, stacked, so the cone would not touch the upper plant, when covering the upper Wall o Water.
