I was able to get some important weather history for my area tonight at a neighborhood dinner visit.
Do you remember hearing of the horrific storm of 1985 that sent southern locations way deep in z3 and z4 territory?
The temp fell here to -25 below zero. It had never been that cold, ever, but I found out tonight in 1980 that temps here fell to -20. I lived in Miami then and never knew about that or seen it in print. A retired construction manager told me about it tonight.
Now, the recent cold temps. I think Cookeville fell to minus -10 and every source I could find here was zero. I did see -2 in some of the outer areas around town. My next door neighbor said she recorded zero also however, another neighbor said her phone service reported a minus -3 in my neighborhood. So Im going to split the difference and report a -1.5 for my yard. Another neighbor at the dinner tonight said her car was showing -8 on the parkway, half-way to Cookeville.
The further south and west of here, was colder and more snow. The temps were all over the board in many areas. Nashville took one of the coldest lows it has recorded. The snow depths seemed to slack off heavily to the far southeast of here but Metro Knox and Nash was hammered in deep snow and the Smoky Mtn towns like Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg almost didnt get any. During the days of the storm some of the highest peaks received no snow but have since picked up some over this past weekend when I got another inch or two. It snowed some in the GSMNP (NC) but no snow fell in Asheville and points east. It was a strange storm and glad you weren't bothered with it. I hope its over now and especially for our buds in the Midwest. Thanks.
