Re: All about Figs and growing Figs
Many years ago, an old Italian man gave me a bag of dark figs, probably called I 258 today.I like the dark figs better. I thought they would taste like dried store bought figs or fig newtons, Boy was I wrong ,They are my favorite fresh fruit and they are very hard to find in stores , plus they don't ship well after they are perfectly ripened. So I had to grow my own. I just ordered a 3 gal. violette de bordeax VDB .My fig tree bushes always drop their breba fig crops that first appear in April before the leaves start to appear and I read that this variety VDB grows a good breba crop . That should give me an early crop in early/mid summer plus a main crop from late summer/ early fall. Besides eating them fresh off the tree, I like them refrigerated cold, sliced on cereal for breakfast or mashed up in spaghetti sauce to give it a fruity, sweet, flavor. I once left a bag of them in my truck and found them about 2 months later in the fall in the bag and they were perfectly dried an tasted good. The heat from the sun in the truck dried them out good. I always look forward to fig season. if you live in a cold, short summer season area, one of the videos says to pinch the tip off the branch end off to stop the branch from growing more figs and let the energy go to maturing the fruit on existing figs.
