My Dad's old home remedy for pain was to take the outer leaves from a head of cabbage and score them, you know, cut lines in them but not all the way through. Heat them in the microwave until they are as hot as you can stand then wrap them around your knees. wrap a towel around that. When they cool off you can do it again, if need be. Not sure how it works.
