Mid-Winter Report from Charlotte

Well, overall, our winter has been slightly milder than average thus far with of course, variations up and down. My palm collection consists of all the safe varieties, plus more adventurously 2 Med palms, 2 Pindo palms, and 4 Sagos that are dicey/marginal in these parts. We had 18° F about 10 days ago and I covered nothing. A few days later they called for a low of 14 F and I covered everything (some better than others) and it looks like so far so good. This Med, Pindo and Sago have each been in the ground for 25 years.To wit:

Everything looks amazing Ken. I don't even see any browning on the sago. I know sometimes damage takes a while to show up, but I think your collection is in great shape. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I friend gave me a JxB about 5 years ago. It was doing well until our December 2022 cold snap where we had consecutive lows of 7, 11, 12 and 13F. Covering it was to no avail, as it did not recover from croak-dom. The text, “Hardy Palms for the Southeast” relates that they don’t like Winters where their “feet” get cold and wet (which is what we have). We’re very different from the Chilean and Argentinean habitats. They are pretty palms!

I’d try one again, but my age and health suggest such a try might be A Fool’s Errand. 😀

In December we had the worst hail storm I have ever been through by far in my life— golf ball size hail or larger for 15 minutes straight. Having only seen this in videos before, I did not appreciate the speed and weight of these stones crash toward earth… more akin to meteorites than the ping pong balls they look like on video. Broken windows, hundreds of holes blown through vinyl siding, and cars that looked like there were hit all over with ball ping hammers. Roofs bashed a bad they leaked immediately in the storm. Most of my palms fronds were beat to shreds. The only species that seemed to hold up well was chamaerops, with Sabal minor being worst. Hail stacked up so deep it was around for 3 days in shady areas, despite warm temps

Then in January we had 72 hours below freezing and 9 degrees as the absolute low. Ice storm during this stuck to the roads the entire 3 days. Bayou froze over completely…
