How do I harvest this Butia fruit ?

I'm noticing them changing colors on my oldest clump , and I wouldn't be concerned but I'm seeing some falling on the ground now . I was hoping for a nice big harvest but if they all fall off I won't have much of a crop .When do you harvest these fruits ? I haven't tasted them yet .

Will although I have no experience with the fruiting process, I've always heard that seeing some falling on the ground is ripened and you can wait for more to drop on the ground. Color changes on the brackets will go from green to yellow/orange to brown when ready. That tree is beautiful.

For eating or planting? The problem also might be that animals will eat the seed or knock them off too soon. You might try bagging them in mesh.

I ate some but most fell before I was ready to deal with them . Next year I'll try to be better prepared .

We are having our first-ever crop this year. Like you, I am a novice and was unsure when to harvest. We had 3 spaths arrive in roughly 2-week staggers. The first bunch started dropping some fruit, so I clipped the rest of that bunch, even though only about 30% were ripe. I figured the birds or wasps would just start attacking the fruit. Now, I am waiting on spath #2. I figure spath #3 will ripen in mid-October. Not sure we will have enough fruit to make jelly. Maybe.
