Brad, your photos of your palms inspired me to start growing palms and subtropicals 15 years ago! It's great to see your palms in 2019. How did you manage to get your palms through the 2013 and 2014 winters?

Brad , you also inspired me to plant palms and other exotics . I saw your pictures about 12 years ago and couldn't believe what you were growing , and they are huge .
I guess you didn't have 8 days below 32F that zapped my Palmettos , except for my smaller Tipton Hardy .
What temperatures have your Palmettos seen , and what temperatures did you experience the winter before last when that prolonged cold hit ?

2013-14 and 2014-15 winters were both the worst. I did loose a few sabals and a butia. The sabals that died were young with about 4 feet of trunk. The older tall sabals had some damage but came through okay. It goes against the theory that the taller the palm is, the more exposed the bud will be to the cold. Maybe age does play a part in survival?

During the 2013-14 winter I had 156 hours below 32. The coldest night was 4. Foliage damage and the center spear browned but never was able to pull it out. Somehow most survived. Location on the south side of the house plays a big part on survival.

Brad like most everyone else here seeing your palms many years ago inspired me to start growing palms too. You showed us that it could be done in our area. Now I have many palms in the ground that are several years old and getting pretty large. Thank you Brad. Your place looks great.

Thanks Brad. That is a hurricane cut palmetto that I transplanted in 2010. I need to update my pics. It is just over 16’ tall with about 9’ of trunk. It hasn't grown much. I have some s. palmettos down my drive that I planted in 2006 from 5 gallon buckets that are almost as tall. I grew them from seedlings that I collected in Daytona a few years before that.
