Two Palms from Gerry’s Jungle circa 1999

Besides the T. Takil referenced in a separate post, I also acquired, via Mail Order, two other palms from Gerry’s Neotropic Jungle some 20 years ago:

This T. Fortunei is my best-looking Windmill. I have plenty of others from different providers - including Plant Delights Nursery - that are fine, but this one has the prettiest crown and stoutest trunk. This is a female, and those are volunteers at its base.

And here is my oldest Butia Capitata. It is now in its 3rd location on my property, and nearly croaked after its first relocation. I’ve never been able to provide it enough sunlight, because I have a lot of mature evergreen and deciduous trees here. So the trunk is still a juvenile after 20 years. It has seen 7 degrees F. twice here at the confluence of 8a/7b - and did not defoliate. It merely lost an emerging spear or two.

So, even though Gerry’s Jungle is no longer in the business (I don’t think) my palms sing its praises every day.

Those are great looking palms Ken . That Trachy is so full . One of the best I've ever seen for fullness and it has some serious height too .

Stunted Palms

I've seen this -- both first and second hand.

There are some palm species that, when presented with major stress events -- like relocation or near fatal cold exposure -- become permanent bonsai plants.

I have a 12 year old Palmetto that is nowhere NEAR forming a trunk, for example. It's defoliated so many times (never spear pull, though). So, it's basically become a costa-palmate minor, for lack of a better term. And I'm actually fine with that. To tell the truth, if it developed according to typical palmetto schedule, I wouldn't have room for it. So, if it stays small, great! I'm just tickled to be able to say I have a 12-year in-ground state tree of SC & FL in my Delaware soil.

I imagine this "stunting" effect can be seen in other species, like your Butia.

Palm Pro Tamar Myers said about 20 years ago that, in her view, the Charlotte/Rock Hill Region is the best habitat for Windmill Palms in the world - even better than its Asia origin geography. And she concluded this because of our climate and soils.

I’ve heard others including Gary Hollar say that it’s really the broader Piedmont from Atlanta to Raleigh that is the optimal habitat region for Windmills.

Re: Stunted Palms

My 20-year-old Med Palms fall into that category. They are “half-hardy” here, and most Springs are in recovery mode from a Winter that damaged them. Right now, after 20 months of good growing conditions, they have never looked better but I know they are just one single-digit event from being set back.
