US March Snowfall

March snowfall-end of season map off weather.com. I had to laugh at the March/April snowfall video as narrated by the meteorologist. She was speaking of how March and April are the snowiest months for some areas of the Rockies. When she read snowfall totals of "11 inches for the month!!!!!!!!!!!!!", it sounded like she was being electrocuted. The exaggerating was pretty outstanding.

Anyway, on the map below, you can see the two dips in East TN that perfectly outline the varying climates of the higher elevations of the Cumberland Plateau and the mountains. I thought that was interesting.

Sounds about right for us. I am in the 3-6" range; so far 4.7" of snow this horrible March which has us at 10F below normal so far. Normally we are out of the woods after St. Patrick's Day, and the forecast is showing us to be mostly in the clear from here on out. The rest of March looks cooler than normal though and doesn't appear to be an early spring here.

Zone 6a, 20 miles SE of Pittsburgh
Previous gardens in Dubois, Pa, Walnut Creek, CA, and Lancaster, NY
Other interests: Edibles, fragrance, hummingbirds and butterflies, and deer resistance

Our spring seems pretty average right now. I notice they've been placing all the flowers and bulbs for sale outside of Walmart and the box stores. I think it's a little risky for any nighttime dips under 32 that could occur. Lots of 60s and 70s though.

There is a bump in the road as you travel east from Nashville

I picked up way more than my average snowfall for the year in the one and only snowstorm of the year in December , and it was more than 11 inches . That should've excited her .

When she was announcing Denver's average March snowfall, I was preparing for some kind of total at least in the 20-inch range. 11 inches of snow in March for Denver sounds like nothing. I thought they were going to have to call an ambulance for her.

I do like the map they showed of when the US gets their highest snowfall totals. It really outlines the difference between Memphis and Nashville (blank) and the Cumberland Plateau and mountains of areas further east in Tennessee.

Yes Rob but I imagine you're not much colder right now. Since the Wilmington comparison, I've been paying closer attention. Our average high right now is 11 DEGREES higher than theirs. Yours can't be that far off ours. Ours is 61.

Will and I are very close to the blue in our states this time of year. Ive seen a foot of snow fall here around St.Pattys day but it melted very quickly and didn't get very cold.
Will, Id say its safe to say "not this year"

Rob , I remember that superstorm in the 1990's when I got 9" , I believe , but other than that I remember just a little dusting on the flowering cherry trees and other flowering ornamentals once in a while in March . I'm sure there have been other significant snows way back that I don't remember , but nothing like that superstorm .
