What are we looking at here as far as damage?

My concern is for my S. palmetto (that is getting big) and 4 pindos that aren't even mine. I don't plant pindos anymore but I've watched these this winter and they look great. It would be nice if they got a few seasons out of them like I did with mine.

Some news media has us hitting 12F Wednesday night instead of 17F. Nothing will have protection.

So hard to believe that Nashville is so "warm". I'm referring to the mid and upper 60s in your forecast, as well as your lowest low over the period (17F). In my 5-day forecast, I have a day (Thursday) that might have trouble getting to 17F FOR THE HIGH.

Nashville used to be Zone 6 on the old 1990 map, I believe. And it's reasonable: Far removed from "big water"; wide open to airmasses plunging southward. Yet, you have more -- far more -- public palm plantings there, and it seems easier to grow palms in Nashville compared to Delaware. I say this out of jealousy. I get how Chattanooga is palm-friendly. Same for Memphis. But Nashville strikes me as being as cold as here or worse. And it's not true.

17 sounds a lot better then 12! Nice to see a big rebound in temps
after....this can help the spear grow out of trouble...theoretically.

This was several single digit lows and 7 consecutive days below freezing around new years. My green trachy and med palm(against the house
)in todays' picture survived -10f in 2011.

You look good Tommy . I don't see any issues as far as any mortality . Butias could get some frond damage below 16F but should survive those temps .

It looks like we bottomed out at 16F overnight so I'm hoping for the best with the butias. My worry is that our high was only 34 the previous day and 25 yesterday. We are supposed to be 44 today though.

That's amazing. I definitely don't think they would have survived that here in our humidity. I love when you post these results.

Thanks Jim. How did you fare in comparison to the forecast? We hit 16F. Our pipes here are not well-protected so last winter I discovered, for the first time, that you have to drip both the hot and the cold water to have both not freeze. I was so mortified by losing a hot shower for a day last year that I ran the hot and cold water for 2 solid days this year and probably for nothing.

Mid and upper 60s are actually not that rare here in winter at all. Our normal high now is in the low 50s where I live. Yes, Nashville is far from water but still inside the influence of the Gulf. You have to remember that Alabama has all-time record lows in the -20s! South Carolina's all-time record state low is lower than Delaware's. Arctic fronts don't make our entire climate though- as you know. I can't imagine thinking Nashville, TN was colder than Wilmington, DE considering our latitude. I see though that you actually don't think that. LOL. Here are some maps I just happen to have in Photobucket that help to tell more of the story and basically just because I love maps. You'll notice a lot changes right above the Southern KY line. The tiny part of cooler weather that slopes down into Eastern Middle TN is the Cumberland Plateau. Nashville is not located there. Nashville is further west. I don't know why these maps are all different sizes but I tried to get some from vortex years too.

We are so fortunate to sleep in comfortable beds and have luxuries
like warm water!
The forecast was pretty much right on, they said around
-20 for the worst of it and thats what we got.
