Washy protection 2019 ( Edit : my protection is adding +26F to the palm )

Today before the protection . It has been down to 21F or 20F officially here . Still some green on it but I'm thinking 23F is the start of noticeable damage . I'm supposed to get to 14F tonight :

After cutting 23 fronds off . It had three other fronds that were cut off earlier in the spring because they weren't that pretty . That means it's putting out about 27 "pretty" fronds a season counting the 4 I left on it plus the 23 I cut off it today :

( Edit : I put a thermometer on the shady side of the trunk outside today 1/21 , and then put the thermometer underneath the protection on the shady side of the trunk . )

Here's the temperature just after pulling it out from underneath the protection . The protection is adding +26F to the palm trunk . More than I thought it was adding :

Thats serious cold your getting right now. Any thoughts of heating? Cables? Spotlights? I would even try will putting a floor fan on highest speed aimed up into the palm. Just moving air has to help.

Under those blankets are incandescent Xmas lights . Believe me it's warm under there . Never hot but nice and warm . I'll put a thermometer under the blankets and get back with you soon on the temperature under those blankets .

I got to 14F and hope that's the lowest for the year .
Now that my Washy's trunk is full of lights I like taking off the blankets and showing off that brilliantly lighted trunk at night . After tonight I don't see any more teens so I might take off the blankets .
Hopefully we have seen the lowest of the season .

Ok. Did you add the photos of the heating later? I missed that. Oh well.
One thing Will that helps is that Washy's have a good deal of mass. Not wimpy trunks. Help them and they can retain heat vs the extreme cold wave.
At that size...it makes it worth it in summer.

Thats a nice bump...you can always add some plastic or more insulation
if it gets really cold, theoretically you should be
good down to below zero (F) but in the case where that could happen
I wouldn't trust it and go with another wrap but I think you got this!

BTW. That suckers getting huge.

It's easy to add a blanket , but if I needed to add more than +26F I probably would only have my Needle and that Washy alive .
Winston-Salem's record cold is -7F , but at the Greensboro airport their official number is -9F . I think that cold was in 1985 .
I'm taking the blankets off today and the lights will give it that festive look at night .

It's been so fun watching your Washy grow. I'm so happy it's in great hands and you make it look a lot easier than I am sure it actually is!
I can't wait to see those fronds grow back!
