I wish there was a way to even read the posts and replies on Facebook pages without signing up for it. There are a lot of pages that I try to read posts and replies, but I can't due to this issue.

There are even pages for government entities like police departments, local governments, etc. that won't let you read them unless you have an account.

If they have removed the requirement for a phone number I would probably create an account.
