“A heads-up to all our customers about possible severe freezing weather around next week..
OK, we have had some very mild Winters since the catastrophic freeze of 2018 when so many plants were killed or severely damaged. I follow many weather services and subscribe to some. There is talk of mid-teens or lower around next week. That is close to the leaf damage temperature for Butia palms and within 5 degrees of leaf damage to Sabal Palmettos depending on duration.
After 51 years as a nurseryman in this area, I have learned firsthand that it is better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best when it comes to weather. I know the weather service guys do their very best with forecast, but Mother Nature can be so unpredictable, and I sure wouldn't want their job.
So, watch the weather on stations like WCTI Channel 12, etc in the coming days for predictions of mid to low teens and be prepared to protect recently planted things such as camellias, gardenias and all young or recently planted palms. Frost cloth works well and is available at places such as Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I suggest our customers pick some up and follow directions for applying it a couple days before the expected low temperature of anything below 12-15 and just hope it doesn't materialize.
As always it is best to ask the place you purchased your palms and other plants for their recommendation for protection of their plant material. They would know how and where it was grown and what is best to do for them.
Here's hoping for a mild Winter.”
