Sabal Tamaulipas & Phototropism

I’ve had a S. Tamaulipas in the ground (obtained a small mail order one) for about 7 years. It’s had quite the growth spurt over the past 2 years
Just recently it has begun to exhibit its touted “lateral trunk creep”, but surprisingly to me, the direction of the creep has been AWAY from the sun.
Is the direction of the “creep” random, or is there some directional relationship (toward or away) regarding the sun?
