Charlotte’s average minimum is around 12 degrees F. So we are in Zone 8, but kinda barely. As I alluded to, I heretofore had nothing but shady spots in my yard for the 32 years I have been here (lots of mature maple, oak and pine trees that I was not willing to cut down). Pindos need sunlight to thrive. So my Pindos have mostly “survived” in fairly deep shade all these years. I now have about 30-40% more light as a result of hardwood tree decline & removal, and my 2 Pindos are putting out more fronds and look healthier.
Palm Icon Tamar Myers had 2 giant Pindos (12’ of trunk each) in her front yard when she lived in nearby Rock Hill, SC (about 25 miles south of here) in the 1990’s.
Some folks say that Pindos are in jeopardy when exposed to lengthy periods of single-digit temps and I bet they’re right.
