How do cherry laurels and Aucubas do where you are? I think of them as 7a plants. If you can grow them with relative ease, you can create a really cool landscape with them and yuccas in 6a.
My Trachy, which was mostly defoliated this past winter, is only just now beginning to pick up speed. Too bad about the timing, though, as we are starting a heat wave. Heat above 85/90 tends to slow Trachies down. Almost to the point of going dormant. So we'll see.
