Thanks for taking the time to respond. You are so right! I eventually lost both of those gorgeous Butias when they got too tall to properly protect for winter. In addition I've lost many Trachycarpus when they reached around 6 feet tall.
I'm still trying to master the art of protecting palms without heat. My latest thought is that they may need some sunlight during the winter.
You are also right about Med. Fan Palms. I've successfully over-wintered many of those with this method. Sometimes I think they are more cold-hardy than trachys.
