In the picture of the Phoenix, do you know what the ground cover is? I'm interested.
As for greening up the Mule, I'd administer 2 tablespoons each of potash, epsom salts and garden lime all dissolved in 2 gallons of water, slow-drip applied at the base of the plant.
If the soil there is alkaline enough, go with 1 tablespoon lime.
Then, be a little patient. It's late in the year, so improvement won't be overnight.
