This winter may be one of the coldest in a while. High latitude blocking is expected, a negative PNA will cause ridging in the West, and a generally negative AO could be in play together. The Indian Ocean being cooler generally favors colder phases of the Madden Julian index as well. And lastly, a weak El Niño has brought the Southeast some of its coldest weather historically.
Even with the jargon I mention above, whether you want to trust that or not, it’s just basically statistics. It doesn’t guarantee anything. When we have these conditions, this is what usually happens though. Our gardens can be unique places and it seems like each winter can have it’s own flavor, even town-to-town in someone’s area. I hope yours is a good one!
