What has made this show’s fandom last so long? For me, it is more than just its entertainment element. It introduced me learning about the Vietnam War which people try to forget in history but it’s the history of the men and women that served there. The show also introduced the great actors that brought those stories to our screens. For others, it enabled Vietnam vets who served to open up and share their experiences with their loved ones and maybe form greater bonds. That is something truly special you just don’t get with TV every day.
‘Tour of Duty’ is undoubtedly a character-driven show which pays fitting tribute to the bravery, courage, deep and unquestioned loyalty and mateship of the Vietnam Vets who actually lived it and the dangers, struggles and tragedies they experienced firsthand through conscription. If anything, it showed that Vietnam vets deserve our unconditional respect and salute.
Thankfully, we have the complete DVD boxsets with the original soundtrack to enjoy for many more years yet and share with new generations of fans. Let’s not let this show, and the stories and history it portrays, be forgotten.
P.S. Thanks to Craig, Mel, DC and Roz for their respective websites and keeping the fandom for this show going.
