We know that the NVA informant was using Tran's map to find out the locations of the patrols.
However, it seems that Tran was not putting his map in the ammo crate to be found but rather to hide it. When the NVA informant could not find it in Tran's hooch (Tran may have walked in on them), he was killed by the NVA informant.
The dialogue between Zeke and Myron also conveys as much.
It was probably obvious. Nevertheless, one of the reasons I love TOD is that the stories and even the characters aren't simple - they make you think.
