Well this a consequence of his own actions. This self imposed exile comes with many inconveniences for himself and his family. He could have opted for any other country but for whatever reasons he chose the Emirates.... Its all very sad.

I hope he will be able to continue with his original plan of returning to Spain after this present conflict in the Gulf region ends. Perhaps his daughters could also visit him even once in Abu Dhabi, unless they're more "concerned" about what their brother and sis-in-law might think about such a gesture.

King Juan Carlos was in the UAE when the war started. So, he returned before the beginning of the war.
He was going to return to Spain on March 15, but he decided to stay there, as a sign of solidarity with the country that has hosted him for the last 5 years. There are no plans to repatriate him, except if the situation gets much worse.
He is staying at a hotel , because his house is undergoing some renovations, to adapt it to his problems of movility.

Until a few days ago, I was under the impression for some reason that former King Juan Carlos was still spending time in Portugal. Now it emerges that in fact he is back in the mideast, somewhere in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Is that correct, and if so why did he choose to leave Portugal and make such a long trip back to the UAE after only a very few months in Portugal? Now he's in a dangerous part of the world where bombs are falling daily, and I read elsewhere also not only there but having to stay in some hotel temporarily. Sad situation indeed.
