I think it is well deserved. Queen Sofia has been vital in the restoration of the Spanish monarchy and still holds an important place. If any queen-consort was to be the first to receive this honor it is very fitting she's the one. Previous Message
Yes, until 1985, only Queen Isabel II was a member, as Sovereign of the Order.

Most certainly well deserved, I think. That HM is the first Queen consort to receive it, cannot be a complete surprise. If I am correct, the only two women before her, were Spanish Isabel II in the past, while European female heads of state were appointed only from 1985 onwards, is it not? Previous Message
The King has awarded the Collar of the Golden Fleece to Queen Sofia.
The RD decree has been published today, but signed on Oct 24. It was to be published for her birthday, but postponed due to the terribled floods in Valencia.
Queen Sofia is the first (former) Queen consort being granted the GF.
