Saint Joana (1452-1490) was a distant cousin of D.Duarte, the eldest daughter of king D.Afonso V.
She was declared Crown-Princess of Portugal of Portugal until the birth of her only brother the future D.João II.
Being the niece of Emperor Maximilian of Austria, and related to several kings in Castille and Aragon, she received several marriage proposals, among which Charles VIII of France or the infamous Richard III of England, whose death she prophetically dreamed with.
But Infanta Joana was not interested in "this world".
She wanted to profess and follow the religious life.
As D.Afonso V only had two children, Infanta D.Joana and Prince D.João, he forbade her to take the vows and remain as "the spare" as someone would say...
Even so, she retire to the Convent of Jesus in Aveiro where she lived as a nun and her piety and devotion granted her the aura of sanctity.
Her tomb is a precious piece of art.
