When I was a kid it was also Mother's day, but then it was transferred to the 1st sunday of May.
The two holidays are connected.
A few days after becoming king in Dec 1st, on Dec. 8th D.João IV proclaimed himself and the kingdom vassal to the Immaculate Conception to whom he was devout.
And he put the kingdom under Her protection and offered Her the crown of the kings of Portugal.
That's why no king of Portugal from the Braganza dynasty was ever crowned .
As an anedocte, I recently learnt that on an event in England hold by Edward VII, where the sovereigns were requested to wear their crowns, king D.Carlos walked in the procession with a page one step behind carrying the crown on a cushion.
6th and 8th December are holidays in Spain. 8th in Portugal, too, afaik. 6th of December is Constitution Day. So, if one gets Dec 7th as a day off, you have a 5 day weekend. We call it a “bridge” in Spanish.
Well, about the museum, l will wait. I do not need a flight to go to Lisbon, so no need to book so early.
Nobody knows about Dec 1st in Spain. And thosands of Spaniards will travel to Portugal that weekend. And this one, too. It is a 3 day weekend. In Portugal, too.
