My impression that they are morons is based on their own past and present behavior, associations, and choice of words in public, not on matters of succession law. In the NYT, the young woman strikes me as vapid, pretentious, loose-tongued and undignified - much like her father and grandfather. The senior Savoys seem more like the Trumps than representatives of royalty.
My impression is that those Italians who are aware of him regard Emmanuele Filiberto and his father as tabloid fodder and that Italian monarchists (relatively few in number) regard Aimone as the head of the dynasty.
